How It Differs From Stephen Kings Classic Novel. It is set to terrify audiences everywhere this weekend as the latest Stephen King adaptation hits theaters today. Its a surprisingly excellent studio horror film, filled with thrills and chills and constructed with care. It is the story of a group of kids who dub themselves The Losers Club a group of social misfits and outcasts drawn together by friendship and a mission to stop the evil force plaguing their small New England town of Derry, Maine. That evil has manifested itself in the form of a shapeshifting clown, Pennywise, a creature that feeds on children and flourishes through the indifference of adults. Director Andy Muschietti and his team really put a lot of thought and care into the film, bringing Kings 1,1. Thats not to say It is an entirely faithful adaptation of Kings book. Screenwriters Chase Palmer Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman have taken Kings prose and altered it significantly to create this film, and were going to examine some of the biggest differences. But first its worth noting that while It may not be 1. Kings novel, it does stay faithful to the spirit of the book the heart and soul, if you will. Its as great an adaptation of a King work as one can hope to get. But now lets examine some of the key differences. Spoilers follow, of course. Time Period. Kings novel covers a variety of time periods, at one point even going back to 3. But the two main time periods that take up the bulk of the book are 1. Muschiettis film, in contrast, is set firmly in 1. This enables It to fit in some pretty killer 8. New Kids on the Block joke that gets funnier the longer it goes on. The time period change is the result of updating the story Kings novel has the Losers Club as kids in the late 1. Muschietti and company have shifted this timeline a bit to have the Losers be children in the 8. Which brings us to the next key difference between book and film. One Storyline Instead of Two. Kings novel features two concurrent storylines the Losers as kids fighting It for the first time and the Losers as adults, returning home to finish off It once and for all. Rather than split these two distinct sections apart, King has them intermingle throughout the novel, similar to The Godfather Part II, which keeps jumping from past to present and then back again. The 2. 01. 7 It takes an approach like the one used for the two part 1. Theres a key difference, though the miniseries actually opens with the Losers as adults, then flashbacks to their childhood for the rest of the first installment. The 2. 01. 7 It starts right when the Losers are kids we wont get to glimpse them as adults until the sequel. This works fine in the film as presented, but the intermingled timelines was a big part of Kings novel, particularly the representation of how the present keeps mirroring the past, as if the characters are stuck in an endless cycle that they must destroy once and for all or be doomed for eternity. Georgies Death and Pennywises First Appearance In both the novel and the film, theres a pattern to Pennywises murderous cycle. Pennywise, aka It, usually sleeps for 2. Whenever It awakens, it kicks off its cycle with one particularly gruesome act. In both book and film, that act during the period when the Losers are children is the murder of Georgie Denbrough, brother of Bill Denbrough, the leader of the Losers Club. In many ways, the death of Georgie is very similar to the source material during a rainy day, Georgie goes outside to sail a paper boat made by Bill through the flooded streets and gutters. The boat vanishes into a sewer grate, where it is rescued by Pennywise the Clown. Here, the film begins to veer off slightly from the book. While the sight of a clown hanging out in a sewer is no doubt creepy, in the book, Georgie isnt instantly creeped out as much as he is surprised. The clown in Kings book seems almost friendly at first, as evident from this passage The clown held a bunch of balloons, all colors, like gorgeous ripe fruit in one hand. In the other he held Georges newspaper boat. Want your boat, Georgie The clown smiled. Georgie smiled back. He couldnt help it it was the kind of smile you just had to answer. In the film, however, Pennywise, as played by Bill Skarsgrd, is instantly creepy. Skarsgrds approach to the character is much different from both the book and how the same character was portrayed by Tim Curry in the miniseries. Skarsgrd plays Pennywise as inherently inhuman, with an utterly bizarre voice that keeps fluctuating in pitch and tone, as if he has no control over how his voice sounds. Pennywise proceeds to murder Georgie, and the scene is brutal and scary, just like the novel. But then comes the biggest disimilarity Pennywise yanks Georgie into the sewer with him, and Georgie effectively vanishes. This serves as a catalyst for the films version of Bill, who still holds out hope that Georgie is alive somewhere, since his little brothers body was never found. In the book, however, Georgies body is found, and Bill is firmly aware that his brother is dead. The Barrens. In Kings book, the Losers primarily play together in a spot dubbed the Barrens, a woodland area near the middle of town. This secluded, underdeveloped place is a refuge for a group of kids who feel shunned by society and who frequently need to hide from bullies. The Barrens do appear in the film, but they dont receive the same prominence. For one thing, the Losers dont actively hang out in the Barrens on their own. Instead, Bill believes that if Georgie is somehow alive, he might be hiding somewhere in the Barrens, specifically in the sewer pipes that empty out there. This is a bit of a strange detail, as if the filmmakers thought that just having the kids actively hang out in the area wasnt good enough and needed to provide them with a motivation. The Losers. It 2. Losers from page to screen. Watch Night Drive HD 1080P. The roles are all cast perfectly, with Jack Dylan Grazer, as hypochondriac Eddie, and Sophia Lillis, as Bev, the lone girl in the club, as standouts in particular. Best of all, the Losers seem like actual friends in the film, not a bunch of actors playing parts. Their interaction comes across as genuine, and they also ring true to the book. However there are a few differences, some minor, some major. In the book, Mike is the de facto historian of the Losers Club. He uses his fathers scrapbook to piece together a history of Derry and Pennywises seemingly eternal presence in the town. In the 2. 01. 7 film, however, Ben is the member of the club who does this. In the film, theres a moment where, after having confronted Pennywise and nearly been killed by him at the House on Neibolt Street, Richie Finn Wolfhard turns on Bill Jaeden Lieberher and demands the Losers stop trying to fight It. Nothing like this happens in the book, but adding it to the film isnt an entirely bad idea. What is a bad idea, however, is how Bill handles the moment. In the film, Bill gets so angry at Richie during this heated exchange that he actually punches Richie in the face. The Bill of the book would never do something like this hes the leader of the club, and he does everything in his power to keep his friends safe while working had to remain cool headed. The biggest mistake the film makes with the characterizations of the Losers, however, involves Bev. Things Stranger Things Stole From Stephen Kings ITEven the great Stephen King himself has expressed his utter joy at having found the many links between Stranger Things and his sci fi masterpieces. Furthermore, the Duffer brothers have not been coy about who and what inspired the show. Eleven shares many similarities with Kings most famous anti heroine, Carrie, such as her psychic powers and sinister upbringing, while there are strong whiffs of Stand By Me like the scene where they walk along train tracks in search of Will. As you may know, the Duffer brothers had originally pitched an IT adaptation but were rejected. Thankfully they went on to create Stranger Things, which has gained a huge fan base who more than appreciate its retro take on the science fiction genre. With inspiration from the likes of King and Spielberg, you can draw many comparisons between Stranger Things and some of your favourite classics, including IT. In the very first episode, Joyce, played by Winona Ryder, asks Will if hes scared of clowns and even Elevens name could be a reference to a famous quote from IT What can be done when youre eleven can often never be done again. And in case you were wondering, Finn Wolfhards role as Richie Tozier is just a mere coincidence as recently relayed by the director of IT, Andie Muschietti. Because of our love for all things strange, it is our absolute joy to present you with 1. Things Stranger Things Stole From Stephen Kings IT. THE FONT USED FOR THE TITLE OF STRANGER THINGS REPLICATES PRETTY MUCH ALL OF KINGS NOVELSThe fact that Stranger Things adopts the same font as many of Stephen Kings book covers has cropped up in numerous articles comparing the show to Kings work. Indeed, throughout the entire season, you can find small copycat clues that link to one King novel or another. With todays obsession with all that is retro, its not hard to see why they chose this font for the title of the show and although this type of lettering is mainly linked to Kings novels, similar fonts can be found on a wide range of vintage horror and sci fi books. Anyone remember those Point Horror books as a kid The dark backdrop with the large domineering letters were too enticing not to pick up. As soon as you see those bold big red letters with the bent edges, you know your retromania will be put to rest BOTH ELEVEN AND BEVERLY ALLOW THE BOYS TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH GIRLSBen from IT and Mike from Stranger Things both take a liking to the new girl, and we see how they deal with their new feelings of attraction and protectiveness. From the outset it is clear that both groups have little experience with the female gender, but we slowly see them grow in confidence as the girls become a welcome addition. Both Eleven and Beverly bring a certain level of maturity and common sense which the boys do not possess. This is most likely down to their experiences, which have made them wary of adults and given them a darker outlook on things. With the new arrivals, we are able to see the boys, Ben and Mike, tackle these foreign emotions. Their love for the young girls mean they both have a lot more to lose, making the danger all the more menacing. BOTH HAVE ONE SOLE FEMALE CHARACTER WHO JOINS THE GROUPThere are some prominent female characters in both. In IT, it is Beverly Marsh, a girl who is abused by her father, who later becomes a victim of domestic abuse as she struggles to leave the second violent man in her life. In Stranger Things, Eleven also has a complex relationship with her own father figure, Brenner. Eleven calls him Papa and it is not yet known if this man is her real dad or not, although it seems unlikely. Brenner is the director of the Hawkins lab in which Eleven was kept prisoner for experimental purposes. Eleven led an isolated life within the lab and is yet to learn about her mother, whom she was taken from as a baby. While Beverlys relationship with her own family is strained and Elevens non existent, it is their misfortune that so fervently ties them to their friends. BOTH FRIENDSHIP GROUPS HAVE A HIDEAWAYMost kids need a hideaway. Whether to escape the unyielding glare of their parents or the equally unyielding presence of their bullies, it allows them to be free of the world to which they are bound. A den or a meeting point form a safe space where the kids can speak with honesty, allowing you to become part of their inner circle. The Barrens in IT is not the most ideal place for children a bit of land covered in trees next to a landfill, but the kids find some peace here and the natural environment allows them to create their own little paradise. In Stranger Things, Will has his own self built fort in the middle of the local woods. The power of Wills sanctuary should not be dismissed as Will uses it to hide from the Demogorgon in the Upside Down. Comparably, the four boys find solace in Mikes basement, which becomes an important location for planning Wills rescue and hiding Eleven. BOTH START WITH A TRAGIC EVENTThe tragic events in both IT and Stranger Things can easily be linked. IT starts with the death of George Denbrough, Bills brother. George is six years of age when he goes out in the rain to play with the boat Bill made him. The boat leads him to a sewer where Pennywise awaits and you can imagine the rest. Equally, Will is seized by the Demogorgon at the beginning of Stranger Things. Mike and Bills losses push the stories forward and motivate them into finding some answers. A brief conversation between Will and Mike before he leaves alludes to what is about to take place when Will confesses that he was defeated by the Demogorgon during their game of D D, making Mike feel weirdly uneasy. Similarly, in IT, once Bill completes the boat, George gives him a kiss to show his appreciation and Bill tells George he loves him. These unexpected signs of affection leave the brothers touched but a little unsettled. THE TARGETED VICTIMS ARE MOSTLY CHILDREN OR TEENSIt likes the taste of children because their fear is particularly delicious, plus they are easier to catch than adults. But what about the Demogorgon In Stranger Things, it seems equally as drawn to adults as it is to children, although we are yet to learn its ulterior motives if it had any or why it was suddenly able to move between the Upside Down and the regular world. For obvious reasons, many have compared the Demogorgon to the monster with the same name from D D. Evidently the Hawkins lab has a fixation with children, having taken the newly born Eleven hostage after drugging the mother and giving the child psychic abilities. Due to Elevens name, it seems as though there could be other numbered children scattered across various labs, but this remains to be seen. BOTH FRIENDSHIP GROUPS GET BULLIEDThe kids in Stranger Things are social outcasts, preferring to hang out with their science teacher than with the other rather intimidating kids at their school. They get bullied, as you do when youre a kid who likes D D, but this also makes their circle stronger. In IT, the Losers Club are persecuted by Henry Bowers and his gang. They are all united by their loser label and each possess a weakness or characteristic that makes them stand out from the rest of their peers. Eddie has his asthma, Ben has his weight and Bill has his stutter much like Dustin who has cleidocranial dysplasia which gives him his lisp.
